Where's the Energy? Part 2

Thinking through the whole energy issue, I have some guesses at where the energy is.

1) I am exercising 1-2 hours a day, 6 days a week (I think that take a little bit of energy).
2) Cleaning and fixing things in my dads house about 1 day a week.
3) Work 6 days a week
4) Playing with kids each day
5) Yard work 2 hours a week (just enough time to maintain)
6) Losing weight (I imagine, though I am not certain, that whatever metabolic activities are involved in losing weight (hopefully fat) take more energy than maintaining or gaining)

Perhaps with all this going on, my body simply has not had enough time to adjust and reach an equilibrium where the energy level have a chance to bypass the demand. With the amount of weight that I have lost and hope to continue to lose, it may be a long time before that happens. Regardless, 6 months ago I would not have had the energy to do what I do today even if I don't feel peppy about it.

Oh well, the new baby will be here in about a month so I will have to muster all kinds of energy to deal with all the same ole + all that my wife does (which is quite substantial) + the demands of the new baby. BTW, that will make child #5. That's right I said FIVE!!!!!

Well then, you haven't caught up to my parents yet... I am the oldest of 6! And the rest of them are boys.

Make sure you get enough rest. It'll be tough with a new baby and everything ELSE you do, but try. I don't feel like I slept for 4 years after my son was born...

Congratulations on the new baby. I had a question for you. What do you think I should do with the villains on my site. I have been deleting them recently, but Spidey think they add to my site. I relegated them all to one post, but I really don't think I need the darkside to motivate me anymore. Just interested in your take.

Wow - kids! Congrats on that, hoping things go well for you guys in this last month. Take care of yourself -you are going to need all your strength when baby comes -you are doing the best thing for that baby - taking care of yourself. :)

Sayre - LOL, my wife hasen't felt like she has had a good night sleep in almost 8 year. So far we have all girls. I am betting this one will be another. We don't peek.

Captain - Thanks. Concerning the villains, I have never been really motivated by the "dark side." When I played football in High School the coaches tried to motivate by pissing me off. It just made me play worse. IOW, I would not miss them, but it's your blog and your motivation.

Christine - My wife is ripe and ready to burst. The birth can't come soon enough for her. My children are certainly a big incentive. I want to be around to enjoy grandchildren too.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will segregte them for awhile. I think they mess up the flow of the blog. I think I lose 10 normal people posting for every jerk. I wouldn't hang around them in real life so why let them have a seat at my online table.
Wow 5 kids. I am so happy for you.

Wow! You are doing A lot! No wonder you don't have any energy! In all your activities don't forget to rest every once in a while. You're going to need it with a new addition.

Wow. 5! If it's girl you have an all girls basketball team!

First of all, congratulations on the forthcoming bundle of cuteness.

I was looking through the alst couple of posts about energy and I low moods and I have 2 thoughts.

The first is a physical one - quite simply, in order to lose weight you are consuming less energy than your body needs. This means until you finally settle it's unlikey you are going to have vast amounts of extra energy.

The 2nd is psychological - have you address the reasons for your weight gain in the first place?

It's easy enough to end up 20 or 30 pounds overweight over a number of years through bad eating habits.

But when you get up to the kind of sizes you have and I did, it usually indicates a much deeper problem relationship with food. And unless the underlying reasons for that are dealt with, it will always be a struggle.

Many of us who have had the 100lb+ weight gains are self medicating with food to dull the pain, in the same way alcoholics and drug addicts do. There are deeper feelings of self loathing and low self esteem working under the surface.

So if food has been your primary medication and you have removed it but still have the underlying low self esteem issues then your you can see how your moods will drop and you will crave your medication again.

Just thoughts to ponder

lily, william, and ftl - Thanks. We love kids and are looking forward to the new one. I can't wait for all the extra feedings, diaper changings, spitting up, and waking during all hours of the night...wait, now I am not so sure about another one. lol

Kim - Great point about the lack of energy due to more energy out than calories in. That is such an obvious point which is why I didn't think of it. lol

Concerning the underlying issues for weight gain in the first place, I have thought a lot about that lately. Partly, I think I learned a lot of bad habits as a child. Partly, I think it's a control issue. Partly, I have always been compulsive which might be related to the control thing. When I flesh these out a little more, I will post on them.

5 kids, have you figure out where they come from yet? lol

In regards to your last two posts - As i've told you, i lost about the same amount of weight a few years ago. I had a huge amount of energy! Enough that i found it hard just to sit down for any amount of time. I was a lot happier too. I'll tell you why i think that was.
I ate a lot of power foods every day, like spinach. [Do a search for power foods coz i can't remember lol] I ate lots of veges with every meal except breaky. And because i had all this stored energy all the time, i was actualy continualy looking for reasons to exercise!
I also ate fish a lot more, and fish boosts your mood [As do the veges]
I also slept really well. I went to bed at the same time and got up at the same time each day
Hope that helps :o)

Cactus, we are still trying to figure out what causes that, lol.

I am not sure what power foods are, so maybe there is some hope after all.
