Biggest Loser-Gainers?

Last Tuesday, Biggest Loser aired a special which brought back some of the old contestants to see if they kept the weight off. It looked like almost all of them gained a good chunk of weight. The number that sticks out in my mind for the men was 240 lbs. It seemed that most if not all the men weighed around 240 lbs. Granted that is much less than most of them weighed to begin with, but for some, that is close to a 50 lb. gain since the end of the show.

I am sure that by the final weigh in, they went to great extremes to weigh as little as possible in order to win the dough. I am sure they probably purged themselves, downed exlax, and dehydrated their bodies for that weigh in. Heck, that is what I would do. Even considering that, it seems like they packed quite a few pounds back on.

I was surprised to see that and not quite sure how to take it. I wonder if it has to do with how they lost the weight. I believe they were on highly restrictive calorie diets. Perhaps their bodies became use to so few calories so that when that ate more reasonable diets, their bodies didn't quite adjust. Perhaps, this is a sign that losing so much weight so fast is not as effective as losing it more slowly.

I know I have been losing rather quickly, but I believe I am averaging in the recommended range of 2-3 lbs. a week. I hope that when I get under each 10 lb. mark, I will never rise above it again.

The best thing they showed was that they were all living fit lifestyles. Many of them were helping others live fit lifestyles as well. Of course, my goal is to live fit for the rest of my life. I am living fit right now. My body is becoming more fit every day.

Living Fit Is My #1 Job!

Good to read your blog, which is more about healthy living then losing weight.

As for these tv programs on losing weight I am not sure they are such a good thing. Don't these people have a truckload of consultants, trainres coaches etc?

The average Tom, Dick, and Harriet don't have that. As such I always feel as if they are cheating a little bit. as if they ARE using the diet pills and other gimmicks.

I have much more admiration for people like you, who travel the road calling upon their own resources, determination, strength and sheer willpower. All of which I hope are fed by loving people around you!

You are an inspiration and I try to follow your footsteps as I weighed the same 4 months ago as you did when you started. I am now 67 lbs on the way. And am determined to lose at least another 40 lbs in the 4 months to go. My target for 01-01-2008?

Losing 100 pounds!

I watched the program as well and am super excited about the upcoming season. What did you think about the one guy married with the new baby? Did you notice how much weight he had put on? He didn't even weigh in on the show.

The new contestants look very inpsiring and its going to be a great season!

pw, I would trade a truckload of consultants for a personal chef, lol. Thank you for your kind words. I am truly humbled.

Christine, I never watched the show until I watched during re-runs on the Style network in the last few months. I always figured there was something ironic about a TV show which is about fat people getting off their butts and exercising making money off of encouraging people to sit on their butts watching tv. That being said, I will probably watch the new season, lol.

Anyhow, I think you are referring to Matt. He is on both the Biggest Loser exercise DVD's. I think the first one was before he won. The second one was a year later. He obviously put some back on. I suspect it has a lot to do with how they took it off in the first place.

Halfman,
The photos are dramatic. I am looking forward to when you hit the 100 lb mark and then 250. I hope you do enjoy the process, because in some strange way I am sad my journey is nearing its end. Thanks for posting on my site. The fake captain stuff made me almost take my entire site down.

gcHey!

I just read an article here in Australia about that.. One of our girls lost 30kg which is roughly 66lbs has put on 20kgs (44lbs).. I hope they get back on track. They all did so well!

I like the reason for your Suzie putting weight on though. Her and Matt look so happy!

I agree with Pandora! I really like you goals, too! Living fit and becoming more fit are some of my goals as well. Weight loss needs to be something more than just weight loss. It's a lifestyle change. I know we all have heard that a million times before. But until we are willing to make a change and implement those changes. All that weight we lose will find us again once more! As for Biggest Loser I haven't regularly watched it. They make it look all to easy and I found that in itself discouraging. ;)

I agree with PW. I think you have a definite advantage in keeping the weight off. The contestants in these shows had help and lived in an isolated environment. They probably couldn’t maintain when they returned to the real world on their own, because they never learned how to do it as appose to you whom is doing it already. In addition, it’s typical to lose quickly initially when you have a lot to lose, so in actuality you are losing at a reasonable rate.

I can understand your fear of gaining the weight back, because I have it too. The statistics are scary; and I don’t know what to say, because I’m still trying to come to grips with that fear. What I do believe is that the knowledge of this possibility can be both a useful tool or a self-fulfilling prophecy if you let it.

Sounds like maybe all the positives did not stick, but overall they made some great improvements that did stay with them.

I don't think they lost weight in a realistic environment. And I'm not surprised that they gained some of the weight back - there's no way you can keep up that kind of lifestyle in real life. That said, I know they learned a lot while they were doing it in the first place, so hopefully they will use that knowledge to lose it again the way the rest of us do it - one pound at a time.

When does the new season start? While I don't always agree with how the show is done, I do enjoy it. This year, I'll watch it while riding my bike!
